MANORVILLE – Sunrise Service Road North / February 1, 2015
Suffolk County Police have arrested two men in connection with a rental scam during which they broke into a Manorville home and one of the men posed as the landlord and fraudulently rented the property.
Jose Laboy and Barry McDaniel broke into a vacant home, located on Sunrise Service Road North, sometime between January 30 and February 1 and changed the locks to the residence. An ad was placed on Craigslist in the “Rooms and Shares” section, both in English and Spanish, advertising a residence for rent. The location of the residence was listed as Center Moriches.
An interested person responded and gave Laboy $1300 as a deposit after Laboy falsely identified himself as the landlord. Police were contacted by the homeowner on February 1 when he returned to his residence to find Laboy and McDaniel inside.
Laboy, 27, of 414 River Road, Shirley, was charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree, Burglary 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree and Possession of Burglar Tools. McDaniel, 40, of F38 Fargo Court, Coram, was charged with Burglary 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree and Possession of Burglar Tools. Laboy and McDaniel were held overnight for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip today.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this rental scam is asked to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
