The intersection of Herkimer Street and Carlton Street in Mastic on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at approximately 8:50 p.m.
Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Mastic last night.
A man was crossing Herkimer Street, at the intersection of Carlton Street, when he was struck by a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe at approximately 8:50 p.m. The driver of the Tahoe, Joseph Virga, 55, of Mastic, stopped the vehicle and called 911. A second vehicle, also traveling southbound on Herkimer Street, then struck the victim and fled the scene.
The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
Detectives believe the second vehicle that struck the victim is a dark-colored, four-door sedan that fled the scene southbound on Mastic Road.
