Man with Hammer Tries to Rob Another Man Putting Groceries in his Car

HUNTINGTON – Southdown Market, 205 Wall St. / Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at approximately 2 p.m.

Suffolk County Police today arrested a man after he attempted to rob a man of his wallet and vehicle in Huntington this afternoon.

A man was retrieving an item out of his trunk at the Waldbaum’s parking lot, located at 60 Wall St., when he was approached by a man, armed with a roofing hammer, at approximately 1:30 p.m. The suspect, Thomas Rivas ordered the victim to hand over his wallet and keys. The victim told Rivas he had no money on him and ran from Rivas without handing over any proceeds. Rivas did not chase the victim.

The victim called 911 and a broadcast notification was made. Second Precinct Crime Control Officers Christopher Timpone and Michelle McHugh saw a man matching the description in front of the Southdown Market, located at 205 Wall St., Huntington, at approximately 2 p.m. and arrested Rivas.


A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
