Detonation of Device on Remote Island

Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding an unspecified device that detonated and formed a crater on Fox Island Sunday, November 28th, 2021.

Suffolk County Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a loud noise in the First Precinct at approximately 11 a.m. Marine Bureau officers located a crater, four feet wide by two feet deep, on Fox Island, off the coast of the Town of Babylon, at approximately 11:40 a.m. The crater appears to have been created when the device was detonated. There were no injuries reported.

Arson Section detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the operator of a vessel seen leaving the area at the time of the detonation. The boat is described as having stripes.
